Cutting boards, service boards, lazy Susans, etc.
Our 43nd anniversary was on July 4th and I wanted to make something special for Alison. She consulted on the design, so it wasn't a complete surprise. It measures almost 13" in diameter and a bit over 1 1/4" thick and it made from walnut, cherry, maple, and white oak. I think it may end up hanging on the wall until its needed.
This was my second end grain cutting board using the "chaos" design. Its much more complicated in both design and build, but the end result is definitely worth it. I especially love the marbling effect you get from the spalted maple. It measures 12" by 20 1/2" by 1 1/4" and is sealed with mineral oil and beeswax. As with all our boards, you receive a tin of board wax when you purchase this.
Our end grain, "chaos" design, cutting boards have proved popular so I made another one. This one is the largest end grain board I've made, measuring 10 1/2" by 21" by 1 1/2". Its made from black walnut, maple, white oak, cherry, and mahogany. Rubber feet on the bottom keep in place when in use. It comes with a 4 oz. tin of board butter to keep it conditioned!
This is, by far, the largest cutting board I've ever built. It measures 41" long by 25" deep by 1 1/2" thick. The client ordered it to replace an old formica countertop. When someone tells you can never have enough clamps - believe them!
This is a custom build for dear old friend. The design is a nod to the mid-century modern style and is made from Sapele. It measures 18" to the seat, 30" long, and 14" deep and, of course, has adjustable feet for those uneven floors that all of us have. I'm always looking for an excuse to build another one of these. Just let me know!
This serving tray made with cherry and curly maple is another homage to the work of George Nakashima. Many boards these days - including some of mine - are live edge or rustic. This one has much more of a mid-century modern vibe. It measures 13" wide by 22 1/2" long by 2" tall and is finished with multiple coats of polyurethane. Shipping is available for an extra charge.
This design was a departure for me design-wise. Its made from pallet wood and retains all of the original holes, saw marks, and the like. Measures 14X24X1. Black metal handles and multiple coats of polyurethane.
This is my first end grain cutting board, made with cherry, walnut, white oak, and maple. End grain boards are wonderful - they don't dull knives as fast as other wood boards and don't show cutting marks nearly as much. It was a great experience and I'd like the excuse to make others - perhaps with different designs.
This is a resent commission piece. The field looks like a cutting board - made with walnut, beech, cherry, and mahogany. The frame is beech. It measures 16 X 21 1/2.
I made this for a good friend as an anniversary present. It's made with a piece of beautifully figured piece of walnut and a piece of ambrosia maple. The live edge at the top gives this piece a unique look.
While at a local mill shopping for other wood, I ran across two "book-matched" pieces of highly figured walnut. They looked perfect for a tablet stand.
This is the second polka dot cutting board I've made. It is a commission piece and measures 12 X 16 X 1. The polka dots are made with walnut, maple, and three different exotic hardwoods - yellowheart, padauk, and purpleheart.
I made this to replace an older board that we used for our beer can chicken. We needed one with a groove to catch the juices from the chicken. The old one was possibly the first board I ever made so it was - well - simple and a bit boring. This one is a bit more visually pleasing - made with walnut, maple, and cherry. I would love to make another, so if you'd like one just let us know! It would make a wonderful holiday present for a family member or friend.
This is our most recent commission piece. It measures 16X24. The design is inspired by a cutting board I made several years ago. The frame is maple. The bottom is maple and cherry with two separate curved inserts made from walnut and white oak. It's finished with multiple coats of polyurethane. If you would like one of your own, just let me know!
I just finished this pizza cutting board for our kitchen. At 13" in diameter it is designed to fit your standard store bought frozen pizza or, better yet, a homemade pizza! This one is made with walnut, cherry, and maple. We made ours to hang on the wall when not in use. If you would like one of your own, just let me know!
This was a bit of an experiment. I wanted to try a design with round wood inlays. I started with a traditional board design using mahogany, cherry, maple, and walnut. I then inlaid plugs made with the walnut, mahogany, and maple. The hardest part was randomly placing the plugs - my wife decided it was best to just try tossing them around. It worked! This one-of-a-kind board measures 10" by 14" X 1".
I built the first one of these in November 2021 because I liked the design and wanted to make a board with a triangle cutout for a handle. It was very popular during the holidays and I sold every one I built. I now have another one looking for a new home! Check out the In Stock page!
This was for my daughter's birthday a few years ago and it was a fun build. It is made from walnut, mahogany, maple, and beech.
I've seen ombre painting on accent walls on lots of home improvement television shows and I wanted to see that would look like on a cutting board. It turns out this is actually called a "gradient" style.
I made one of these for the firs time in the Fall of 2021 because it looked like a fun build. It has turned out to be one of my most popular boards. It is made with maple, walnut, and mahogany and measures 8 1/2" by 18" by 1".
We wanted a lazy susan for our breakfast table so I built one. Since then I have sold a number of them. This can be built as a straight up lazy susan or it can be built as a convertible lazy susan - where the top is removable and can be used as a cutting board.
I had this piece of white oak and it was begging to be made into a live edge tray.
This is another piece that my wife asked me to build. We use it whenever we want a late afternoon snack of cheese and crackers.
This was another birthday gift for my daughter. The three trays nest within each other for compact storage when not in use. They are made with white oak and mahogany. It was a demanding build - the mitered cuts had to be done very carefully - but it was fun.
Made from white oak with a walnut strip, this ended up being a birthday gift for a good friend and neighbor.
This is made from a live edge paulownia slab I got from a friend in a local woodworking guild.
This was originally built because I wanted to learn the technique of doing curved inlays. The first one was sold and I gave another to a friend as a Christmas gift.
A resent commission piece.
